Midge: The little dog who made people stop, feel and act
There are some dogs who arrive quietly, without fuss - and yet somehow change everything. Midge is one of them.
When he first came into our care, nothing about his situation suggested just how serious things would become. At a glance, it looked like bad luck and unfortunate timing: bowed front legs, and two potential homes that fell through at the last moment.
But something didn’t sit right.
Our founder, Becky, made the call to pause. “Something in my gut said to wait and watch him a little longer.” That instinct would prove critical.
When Things Started to Unravel
What followed happened quickly - too quickly.
Midge’s legs began to worsen, but it wasn’t just physical. His movements changed. Subtle at first, then impossible to ignore. Then came the tremors.
And one night, everything escalated. Midge suffered a seizure - sudden, distressing, and impossible to dismiss as anything minor.
From that point on, the focus shifted completely. This was no longer about rehoming or routine care. This was about understanding what was happening inside a very small, very vulnerable dog.
A Devastating Reality
As results came back, the picture became clearer - and far more difficult to accept.
There are strong indications of a serious neurological issue, alongside the already complex problems with his legs. While surgery could have addressed the physical side, the neurological concerns present something far more uncertain.
In cases like this, it’s not just about what can be done - but what should be done. Becky describes the moment that reality set in:
“If it had just been his legs, we would have done everything to fix them. But this is far more complex - and far more serious.”
At one stage, the kindest option appeared to be ensuring Midge’s remaining time was simply safe, calm, and filled with love.
And for a while, that’s exactly what we prepared for.
Choosing to Keep Going
But Midge’s story didn’t end there.
After days of reflection, difficult conversations, and the kind of emotional weight that comes with making decisions for those who cannot choose for themselves, Becky made a different call.
“I couldn’t walk away not knowing. I couldn’t give up on him without being sure we’d done everything we could.”
That decision has led us to where we are now.
A specialist has recommended an MRI - not as a cure, and not as a guarantee of good news, but as a way to finally understand what Midge is facing.
It is the only way to make informed, fair decisions about his future.
The cost of this is significant: £3,500–£4,000.
The Response No One Expected
Since sharing Midge’s story, something remarkable has happened.
People have shown up.
Not just with donations, but with messages, support, and a genuine sense of connection to a dog many have never met.
Some have followed his journey from the beginning. Others saw his face once and couldn’t scroll past. Many have given in memory of dogs - and people - they’ve loved and lost.
Every contribution, no matter the size, has carried the same message: this life matters.
The Dog Behind the Story
Amid the uncertainty, Midge remains exactly who he has always been - gentle, sensitive, and deeply aware of the world around him.
He seeks warmth. He leans into comfort. He responds to kindness in a way that stays with you.
And perhaps most moving of all is the bond he’s formed with another young dog in our care, Bear.
Bear plays differently with Midge. Slower. Softer. As if he instinctively understands that this is not a dog who can keep up - but one who still deserves to be included.
It’s a quiet kind of compassion. The kind you don’t train.
The kind that simply exists.
Why This Matters
This isn’t just about diagnostics or decision-making.
It’s about giving a dog clarity.
It’s about making sure that whatever happens next is based on understanding - not guesswork.
And it’s about ensuring that, from beginning to end, Midge’s life is treated with the care, dignity, and honesty every animal deserves.
“Whatever happens, he deserves that chance,” Becky says. “He deserves us to be sure.”
